As automation gets more and more powerful, the position of human operators needs to be redefined. Without question, the human capabilities to cope with complex unforeseen situations are superior, but as some prominent examples show, in contrast to automation, humans cannot guarantee consistent and reliable long term performance. If human operators lack experience, are tired, sick or distracted their performance can be lower than what is necessary to ensure safe operation.
